Two shots today from the same location as yesterday's. That's Kendall in the top one. Him and I spent a great deal of time trying to find a particular section of the tailing ponds, which from Google's satellite maps looked to be the most interesting. It was starting to get late in the evening though so we had to settle for this much smaller trickle of what-have-you, not knowing that what we were really looking for turned out to be located directly across from where we were (perhaps foolishly) standing. All in all the expedition wasn't a total loss though. There was a brief moment where the sun came out through the clouds which added a bit of, erm, life to the landscape and made for some decent enough pictures. And we didn't get arrested either, which is always a bit of a plus. Definitely a surreal place to be though. Normally ponds/lakes of this size in Northern Ontario would be quite noisy at this time of the year with the sounds of birds and frogs. This place was dead quiet which isn't exactly surprising given the thousands of acres that have been given this sort of sludgy treatment. I should also point out that walking on top of this surface felt a little unnerving, and yet pleasent at the same time. It was like a cross between rubber tires and foam cushions. Definitely not the type of surface that I've ever experienced walking on, at least not outdoors. Kendall said it would make for great flooring in his basement. I had to agree. |
