05/17/05 — Do Not Move |
|||||
I like a lot of things about this picture. Technically speaking, I'm pleased that everything came out looking so sharp (thank you, EF 50mm 1.8) and perfectly straight, flat, and yes, even boring. I also like how, despite the fact that each of these objects must weigh several tons, it had to be noted that they really should not be moved-- for what reason, we'll never know. Finally, and this has more to do with what isn't captured here, I also like how Kendall is hidden behind the one on the left, busy setting up a shot. It reminds me of just how big these things were which makes the words seem even more absurd. This was taken outside one of the buildings at the UCAR Carbon factory in Welland. Everything about the place was frustrating. The point of entry into the propery involved a ridiculously tight squeeze underneath a barbed wire fence. The walk over to the main building (across brownfields in need of some serious environmental remediation) was long and in plain view of an active security gate. The buildings themselves were boarded up, locked, most likely alarmed, and to make matters worse, had concrete traffic barricades pressed up against the doors-- just in case. So yeah, given the fact that we didn't have a bulldozer or a forklift handy, exterior shots were the only real option. |
