08/30/06 — At a Loss

For some reason, whenever I go to Bethlehem Steel, I always end up taking pictures of stuff like this. For the past year and a half now I've been trying to make sense of the place, both in terms of its turbulent history and its often mind-boggling engineering. There's a lot to have to work through and at times it seems impossible to be able to capture all of that with a camera. Lately, I've tried making it my goal to go and take just one photo that I feel best represents the place I'm visiting. You know, the quintessential shot that encompasses all the elements I'm interested in showing. But with Bethlehem Steel, I give up. Bits and pieces of garbage haphazardly bound together on the ground is probably about as good a representation that I could possibly come up with. There's just too much.
