10/18/06 — The Elephant in the Room

Inside one of the asbestos mills in Black Lake, Quebec. It closed in 1997 but the power's still running. I'm not sure what they're planning on doing with it, but it doesn't look like a thing has been touched since its retirement.

There are no signs that employees here ever used any form of breathing protection. Not even paper dust masks. Not that they'd do much good anyway given the fact that asbestos particles are remarkably small. Despite the collection system involving vacuums and blowers, the stuff would have been in the air all the time. You can see where dust has settled on the floors and various other places.

There are somewhat ironic posters hung up with slogans like "Safety is our Business" as well as signs indicating that one shouldn't wear hearing protection for longer than seven hours straight. Given the health risks involved in working with asbestos, It's an odd juxtaposition to say the least.
