11/29/06 — Order in the Court

Since Montreal has practically jack-diddly when it comes to explorable storm drains, Nel and I decided to take a 2 hour drive out to our nation's capital (aka Ottawa) last night to see what we could find. Our first target: this drain that was said to run beneath or alongside the Supreme Court of Canada buildings. After taking the law into our own hands (in as many words), we made our way up through it. Roughly 100 meters in we came to this unique chamber consisting of four twelve foot tall pillars, that helped support a round concrete disc. At the centre of this arrangement was a fairly large metal barrel with holes stamped out of it, presumably to help evenly disperse the steady stream of water which was falling straight down into it from from a 50 foot long shaft above. It was all very strange in a Rube Goldberg kind of way. Exactly the sort of thing that makes a long drive worthwhile.
