11/22/07 — Headframe |

I didn't want to have to convert this one to b&w because I've been trying to be a bit more consistent with the stuff in this series. Course, some stuff just ends up looking a bit better that way. This is the former headframe of the Johnson Mine which for some reason is still standing despite the fact that 98% of the peripheral buildings were demolished long ago. The entire facility can be seen in the top right of this photo from 1940. Also worth noting are the number of houses that were nestled in between the mines. As mining operations expanded during the 1960s and 70s, the majority of these houses (or "surface encumberances") were either torn down or physically relocated to the outlying areas at the top of the photo and elsewhere. |
