12/03/07 — We Live in French |
|||||
"In Quebec, we live in French." 1977 marked the year that the Quebec government made French the official language of the province, going so far as prohibiting the use of English on signs and in most commericial transactions. It was also the year that the Quebec government started to take control of the asbestos mines after close to a century of American or European ownership. Today the three remaining mines remain nationalized and some would say are still a point of pride for both the government and the local french community. |
