06/13/08 — Rusty

This one started off as a 9km long conduit built during the early 1900s. Its purpose was to bring water from the St. Lawrence River to Montreal's treatment plant for "pumping purposes." It was eventually converted to a sewer, most likely in the 1930s which was when the city made widespread changes to both its potable and wastewater systems. It's all concrete except for this particular stretch which had to be replaced with steel after a collapse that occured in 1913. A photo taken during that time can be found here.
