08/05/08 — It's Finished

There was a two-month long strike here in 2005, and it's probably no coincidence that the place got shut down for good less than a year later. It's an American company and its lone Canadian facility in Montreal was its only unionized mill. The company had already made it clear before the strike broke out that they were looking to contract out certain jobs to non-unionized labour. They eventually reached a settlement, but I don't imagine the company was too pleased with having lost over three million dollars. As a result, the facility's remaining 350 employees were let go, and the entire property was put up on the real estate market shortly thereafter. It's been two years and still no buyer.
